2024 Per Capita Personal Income by County

Here’s something that might surprise you. Teton County, Wyoming, had the highest per capita personal income (PCPI) in 2024 at $532,903, marking a 78% increase since 2020, a trend explored in the county’s economic profile. How do we know this? Read more below. In early February, the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) updated its personal income estimates and ProximityOne has applied this data to its Regional Economic Information System (REIS) to explore economic data not otherwise easily obtainable. Though the full updates are still underway, sample reports for selected counties are available, providing insights into economic trends and income patterns.

About Personal Income
Per capita personal income (PCPI) is the best single measure of personal economic well-being. PCPI is computed and updated annually by BEA. PCPI is calculated as the total personal income of the residents of a county divided by the population of the county. BEA uses the Census Bureau midyear population estiqamates.

Personal income is the income received by, or on behalf of, all persons from all sources: from participation as laborers in production, from owning a home or business, from the ownership of financial assets, and from government and business in the form of transfers. It includes income from domestic sources as well as the rest of the world. It does not include realized or unrealized capital gains or losses.

Personal income is measured before the deduction of personal income taxes and other personal taxes and is reported in current dollars (no adjustment is made for price changes).

County personal income differs slightly from the estimate of U.S. personal income in the National Income and Product Accounts because of differences in coverage, in the methodologies used to prepare the estimates, and in the timing of the availability of source data. In BEA’s county statistics, estimates of personal income for the U.S. is the sum of the county estimates and the estimate for the District of Columbia.

About Teton County, WY
Teton County, WY, has held the top spot for per capita personal income in the U.S. for over 20 years. It is the only county to surpass the half-million-dollar mark. There are several reasons.

The “Investment-Only” Economy. Unlike most of the country, where wages and salaries drive personal income, Teton County’s wealth is fueled by assets. 77% of total income in the county comes from dividends, interest, and rent (investment income). By comparison, investment income accounts for only about 20% of the total income for the average American. Because the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) calculates per capita income by dividing the total income of a county by its population, a few hundred billionaires moving there can drastically skew the average upward, even if most local service workers earn much less.

Tax Haven.. Wyoming is the most wealth-friendly state in the U.S. due to No state income tax, No estate or inheritance tax, No gift tax.

High-Value Migration. In recent years, data showed that families moving from high-tax areas like San Francisco to Teton County brought an average of $586,000 in income per person with them.

Limited Land. About 97% of the land is publicly owned (Grand Teton National Park, National Forests, etc.), leaving only 3% for private development. This scarcity, combined with the natural beauty and tax benefits, keeping the per capita average exceptionally high.

The Importance of Small Area Data

.. small area data refer to geographic, demographic and economic data tabulated for census blocks, block groups and census tracts — all subdivisions of counties. While these data might be produced by anyone, perhaps the most useful data in examining the Situation and Outlook are data tabulated for the decennial census and American Community Survey (ACS). These data are important because they tell us about local area characteristics, and ideally how these characteristics are trending. The importance of small area data applies equally to large high density population areas and more rural sparsely popuated areas. Without these data, stakeholders, planners and leaders have to guess about the current situation and how it is trending. These decision-making data enable us to know about, for example, the poverty rate, unemployment rate, dependency ratio, migration and many other key measures within small towns or an area that might be destined for gentrification. Armed with these facts, or best estimates that can be developed, stakeholders are better enabled to develop plans and actionable steps to address a myriad of business, government and societal issues.

Flexibly examine a neighborhood. Create map views of small area data using iVDA for any area in the U.S. See details.

Relating Small Area Data to Other Geography/Subject Matter Small area data can be very effectively used to create a mosaic decpicting how sub-geographies can show how patterns and characteristics vary area across a larger area such as a town/city, school district, congressional district, congressional community, urban/rural area, among others. Compare, for example, how voter registration data compare to citizen voting age population.

Schools and School Districts While not “small areas” K-12 schools, typically processed as point/location data, are important small area data for many reasons. Annual administrative data are tabulated for all public schools by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) Common Core of Data (CCD) program. School Districts, while sometimes a whole county or group of counties, are typically sub-county areas for which data are tabulated from the decennial census and American Community Survey (ACS) as well as administratively reported data from the NCES CCD program.

What about ZIP codes? ZIP codes are a very popular geography for examining sub-state areas. Mainly becasue we all know our ZIP codes and also because many address-list oriented data can be tabulated by ZIP code. But ZIP codes are lines, not polygons, are very uneven in population size and very frequently transcend county boundaries. The U.S. Postal Service does not define ZIP codes with boundaries. The statisitcal area substitute fro USPS ZIP Code is the Census Bureau ZIP Code Tabulation Area (ZCTA). A limiting features of ZCTAs is that they do not cover the U.S. wall-to-wall

iVDA — Using VDA GIS Embedded in HTML

.. using iVDA and Visual Data Analytics .. a Geographic Information System (GIS) is a computer -based tool that allows users to store, analyze, visualize, and interpret geographic data. Geographic data, also known as spatial or geospatial data, identifies the location of features on earth. GIS combines the visual elements of maps with the ability to link characteristics about those features in datasets. This relationship allows GIS to locate, display, analyze, and model data.

GIS technology integrates geographic data with statistical and adminstrative data using statistical methods and analytics. These abilities make GIS valuable to a wide range of public and private enterprises for explaining events, predicting outcomes and planning strategies. And collaborating on those issues.

iVDA is an HTML iframe embedded version of VDA Web GIS Verison 4. iVDA can operate with any VDAGIS project. When the Web page containing an embedded iVDA iframe, several parameters are set that control the start-up view shown in the iVDA user interface such as the one shown below. These tools and support evidence-based decision-making and efforts to understand how people make a difference in communities across the country and throughout the world.

Start using iVDA now using the VDAGIS Discovery section. This is the first of a series of posts on using iVDA.

How & Why County Population is Changing? Click the graphic to open the corresponding section of VDAGIS Discovery. Create your own dynamic maps.

The above graphic, create your own variations, shows patterns of how the population by county is changing. As shown in the legend, blue and green color fill patterns show counties gaining population 2020-2023. Orange and red fill patterns show counties losing population. The sub-categorgies “mainly through migration” means that migration has been more of a factor in population change that “mainly through natural change” (births less deaths). This example of a thematic map provides an example of visual pattern analytics. It gives insights to facilitate collaborative decision-making.

Examining Urban Area Population Change 2020-2023

The Four Corners, FL Urban Area experienced the highest percent population change (31.7% or 92,396 to 121,694), from 2020 to 2023, among the 431 Urban Areas having 2023 population of 65,000 or more. Urban Areas are a statistical geography defined by the Census Bureau. The 2,613 “2020 Census Urban Areas” are comprised of sets of urban census blocks. See more about urban and rural classification and interactive table. Urban areas are important because they reflect geographic concentrations of economic activity, providing a hub for jobs, innovation, education, and diverse social interactions, often leading to higher standards of living through improved access to healthcare, infrastructure, and public services, while also driving significant portions of a nation’s GDP.

This section reviews how the population of largest 2020 Urban Areas (UAs) have changed since Census 2020. Circular markers in the graphic shown below represent the lergest (ACS 2023 1-year estimates) UAs located in the lower 48 states. 119th Congress Congressional District Geography

.. the new 119th Congress Congressional Districts are those that will be used in the 2024 elections .. each state has one or more congressional districts whose boundaries are based on redistricting and the decennial census. Each of the U.S. 435 congressional districts (CDs) are represented by a congressperson in the U.S. House of Representatives. In 5 states (AL, LA, GA, NC, NY) the 119th CD boundaries differ from the 118th CD (January 2023 through December 2024) boundaries. These changes are the result of a legal process where a finding determined that the redistricting was flawed (due to various demographic issues). The 119th CD boundaries are those used in the November 2024 elections and will run from January 2025 through December 2026. Then comes the 120th CDs which might have the same boundaries as the 119th CDs.

Comparing 118th & 119th CD Boundaries in the Atlanta, GA Area
