President Donald Trump still has options to keep taxing imports aggressively even after the Supreme Court struck down the tariffs he imposed last year on nearly every country on earth. The Justices didn't buy the president's sweeping claims of authority to impose tariffs as he sees fit. But Trump can re-use tariff powers he deployed in his first term and can reach for others, including one that dates back to the Great Depression. Read more: https://lnkd.in/enWvWrAA

🫠 The final read on consumer sentiment in February showed Americans' feelings about the economy were little changed from January. ‼️ But this survey, taken before Friday's Supreme Court ruling that struck down a wide swath of President Trump's tariffs, also shows a possible path for sentiment improving if this decision eases pricing pressures. (It's still a top concern.) 💭 "About 46% of consumers spontaneously mentioned high prices eroding their personal finances; readings have exceeded 40% for seven months in a row," University of Michigan surveys of consumers director Joanne Hsu said in the release. 📉 "Sentiment is about 13% below a year ago and 21% below January 2025." 📝In my latest for Yahoo Finance: https://lnkd.in/eU7_uSyJ

The Supreme Court scrambled the US trade landscape with a decision announced Friday striking down the centerpiece of President Trump’s second-term tariff program. The 6-3 ruling in Learning Resources, Inc. v. Trump came just over one year into Trump’s second term and after skeptical questioning from key justices during oral arguments last November. It appears set to immediately halt a massive section of Trump’s tariffs first announced last year on “Liberation Day” using a 1977 law called the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA). The law gives the president the ability to declare an economic emergency and take action but doesn't specify tariffs as a remedy. More, from Ben Werschkul: https://lnkd.in/e_3w963p
