The basin lies to the east of the Chaȋne de Puys and to the east and SE of Clermont-Ferrand, volcanic rocks comprise over 230 occurrences, mostly as small monogenetic edifices, lying within an area of c. 25 x 40 km (Chazot & Mergoil-Daniel 2012).
