The region is c. 1400 km² and contains the relicts of c. 300 Paleogene volcanoes (Huckenholz 1983; Jung et al. 2006). It lies between West and East Eifel volcanic fields, with which it overlaps and extends to the NE towards the Siebengebirge. The centres are deeply eroded stocks and plugs, rangingin diameter from a few metres to several hundred meters, which have penetrated folded Devonian sediments; there are some remnants of lava flows.
