Old magnesite quarries.
The Monti Pelati nature reserve is a protected natural area, more precisely a provincially managed nature reserve, located in the Canavese area, in the metropolitan city of Turin, in Piedmont.
The Piedmont Region established the nature reserve, covering an area of 146 hectares, in 1993; administratively the protected area includes the municipal territories of Baldissero Canavese, Castellamonte, and Vidracco.
The area of the nature reserve coincides with that of the site of community importance and special conservation area called Monti Pelati and Torre Cives (IT1110013).
The reserve occupies a narrow strip of barren hills called the Monte Pelati or the Monti Bruciati, which extend for about three km in a south-west/north-east direction between the municipalities of Baldissero Canavese, Castellamonte, and Vidracco. The short ridge culminates with the 585 m above sea level of the hill on which the Torre Cives stands.
Located a short distance from the Ivrea Moraine Amphitheatre, the area has a completely different geological nature from the surrounding areas. The constitutive substrate of the Monti Pelati is in fact peridotite, an ultrabasic rock very rich in magnesium and of extremely deep origin, as it comes from the upper layers of the Earth's mantle (African mantle). The natural degradation of this type of rock gives rise to very particular soils, unsuitable for cultivation, and which support a vegetation and an entomofauna which are also peculiar.
One of the most interesting and rare plant species hosted in the protected area is Campanula bertolae, endemic to the Western Alps; also less widespread are Linum suffruticosum and Fumana procumbens, both xerophilous herbaceous species.
