Actor. Born in Chicago, Illinois. He served in the United States Navy during World War II aboard the heavy cruiser USS Northampton when it was sunk off Guadalcanal. He also served on the USS Nashville during the invasion of the Philippines and survived a kamikaze hit that caused 223 casualties. He was a distinguished performer best known for winning the Academy Awards (Oscars) for Best Supporting Actor for "All the President's Men" (1976) and for "Julia" (1977).
