He also served on the USS Nashville during the invasion of the Philippines and survived a kamikaze hit that caused 223 casualties. He was a distinguished performer best known for winning the Academy Awards (Oscars) for Best Supporting Actor for "All the President's Men" (1976) and for "Julia" (1977).
