A long-standing premise on Wall Street is in full gear in 2026: rotation is the lifeblood of most bull markets. Wednesday was a great example -- and leads to another undisputed truth about the financial markets (especially as we currently are in a technology-dominated economy): mean reversion is always a force of nature. The three best-performing sectors on Wednesday were Energy (XLE +2.3%), Consumer Staples (XLP +1.4%), and Real Estate (XLRE +1.1%). Yet they also were the three worst-performing sectors in 2025. Information Technology (XLK -1.2%) was the second-worst performer on Wednesday after taking the sector crown in 2025. Year to date, Materials (XLB) and Energy (XLE) lead, both popping 7.5%, with Industrials (XLI) and Consumer Staples (XLP) not far behind (both climbing 5.9%). While the Industrials sector was a top performer in 2025, Consumer Staples was down at the bottom. Drilling down in market cap this year, the iShares Micro-Cap (IWC +7.7%) is leading, followed by the Russell 2000 (IWM +7%), the S&P Small Cap 600 (SML +5.8%), the S&P MidCap 400 (MDY +5%), the S&P 500 Equal Weighted (SPXEW +3.6%), and the NYSE Composite (NYA +3.3%). Bringing up the rear are the mega-caps, with the Invesco S&P 500 Top 50 (XLG) down 0.5%, the S&P 100 (OEX) flat, and the Nasdaq 100, Nasdaq, and S&P 500 up about 1%. Will this rotation last a quarter? A year? Currently, most of the smaller-cap indices have bolted to all-time highs, and that wasn't the case when they led in recent years. Another bullish catalyst is positioning, as we would guess that a good number of major market players have been caught, at least so far in 2026, holding a lot of mega-cap stocks.
