No RecordDragon, The labels are on the wrong sides of ADA 43. The label on ADA 43A reads ADA 43 B-1 in the run out groove. (and vice versa).

JCM800 I have listened to mine and I hear no knocking. Maybe the knocking is your neighbour banging on the wall cos you are playing this too loudly!

Jake Smarm: Could your single be ADA 12? That has "Cruel To Be Kind" as the B-side (although an earlier recording).

My copy has the labels on the wrong sides - Cruel To be Kind is on the B side according to the labels. Anyone else?

Cruel to be Kind was first recorded for the 1974 lost Brinsley Schwarz LP, It's All Over Now (UA declined to issue it when they dropped the band - now thankfully available).

You can't miss it at 2.47 but it's all over the recording if you listen carefully.

I was unable to hear said noises on the video that was posted by BigBadBluesMan, so here's another with higher quality audio

you can also hear it at 22 seconds, 1:08, 2:10 & 2:28. I always thought it was the sound of fingers sliding on bass strings or something, I've never been sure what that sound is.

Am I the only one who has noticed a strange out of time knocking noise that can be heard on this?! You can hear it most clearly between 2.46 and 2.49 It doesn't matter if it's a CD version, 7", LP vinyl or whatever.
Nick Lowe needs to be asked - What the hell is the knocking noise!?!

I am certain I had an old Capital Radio programme featuring Nick Lowe working different versions of Cruel and a couple of others , demonstrating how singles went from conception to final release. Didn't specifically mention previous releases , but given how Lowe/Rockpile/Edmunds divided up their output at times to share things out its no big surprise.

Unfortunately I recorded it onto tandy tape which lost all its backing , there is a pile of oxide dust which I doubt is readable at all somewhere in a bedroom cupboard.

but they're two different recordings (this one's more accoustic probably backed by Rockpile while the older one sounds like a organ dominated Costello/Attractions track)
