Fred Dalton Thompson died Sunday in Nashville after a lengthy battle with lymphoma, his family said in a statement.
Thompson, 73, was born in Alabama in 1942. He was the first member of his family to attend college and graduated with degrees in philosophy and political science. He earned a J.D. from Vanderbilt in 1967 and worked as an attorney and lobbyist. Thomspon was minority counsel for Senate Republicans during the Watergate scandal.
He served as U.S. Senator for Tennessee from 1994-2003, after which he launched an unsuccessful bid for president in 2007 before retiring from politics.
Thompson starred in over 20 motion pictures, including "In the Line of Fire," "The Hunt for Red October," and "Cape Fear." He may be best known for his role as District Attorney Arthur Branch on the TV show "Law & Order." -
