Language Diversity Conference

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

The Language Diversity Conference, themed "Strengthening Language Communities in the Open Knowledge Movement" is a global gathering dedicated to advancing linguistic diversity within the Wikimedia community and the broader open movement at large.

The inaugural edition will take place in Accra, Ghana, from October 2 to 4, 2026, bringing together over 100 language activists, Wikimedia contributors, researchers, and individuals working in language and cultural heritage organizations. The conference also seeks to explore strategies for expanding multilingual content, preserving linguistic heritage, and addressing challenges faced by underrepresented language communities in the digital space.

Hosted by the Wikimedia Language Diversity Hub, Wikitongues and Wikimedia UK in collaboration with the Dagbani Wikimedians User Group, the conference will feature keynote talks, panel discussions, and interactive workshops covering topics such as:

  • Strengthening the presence of minoritized and Indigenous languages on Wikimedia projects;
  • Overcoming technical and accessibility challenges for multilingual content creation;
  • Ethical considerations in digitizing oral traditions and community knowledge;
  • Leveraging technology such as AI, speech-to-text, and localization tools for language sustainability and revitalization; and,
  • Building partnerships to support long-term language documentation and revitalization efforts.
